Results for the U14/U16 and Junior Girl Regional Grass track Championships Results

Race Report by Sarah Lewthwaite

Regional Championships Night! An improving weather forecast meant we were definitely running, only for the rain gods to laugh at us with a deluge. A quick inspection and the track was ‘surpisingly okay’ so we were running.

A short freewheel programme became even shorter as the weather put off many, but 10 hardy freewheelers came to the start line. No league points were on offer, but the lure of sweets for winners meant for some strong racing. Elora Foley gained the largest handful of sweets with good wins in all her races, even the slow race.

Sweets distributed, it was time for the championship fixed wheel races. U14/U16 raced an omnium, juniors and seniors, sprint and endurance races. A strong showing from Otley brought overall wins for Eleanor Hunt, Megan Cullen and Zoe Kitching in their respective age groups, and Otley wins continued with Tom Cullen in the Junior 400m sprint championships. Joseph Weston from Cottingham Coureurs RT broke the Otley dominance, winning the senior 400m sprint but with top 3 from the senior and junior sprints going through to race for the Summersgill cup, Tom Cullen again triumphed as the fasted one-lapper.

Final race of the evening was the 5k adult / junior championships – 12 1/2 laps of great racing with a nail-biting finish. An early solo attack off the front by Alex Foley set the pace but with 3 laps to go, the chase was on. With Robbie Pollard eating up his lead with every pedal stroke, Alex dug deep and hung on for the win, Robbie second and Tom Cullen finishing strongly for third.

Well done to all riders, many thanks to all the volunteers that made the night’s racing happen.
