Report from Sarah Lewthwaite.
Grasstrack Week 9 – another fine evening of exciting racing and although numbers suffered slightly with the start of the school holidays, we welcomed two new riders for their first go at grasstrack. In fact, they were first up with a half-lap time trial and then it was straight on to the sprints. Our sprint stars of the day were Harriet, Daniel, Anna, Taylor, Elora and Denholm; Elora and Denholm in particular showing the form that has brought them recent success at regional and national level. The 1,2 or 3 lap scratch races followed straight on with strong riding again by Taylor, Elora and Denholm.
With a brief break for the first of the fixed wheel races (a fine win for Martin Portman in the 6 lap block handicap), it was onto the freewheel handicap races, and a great display of determination by new rider, Ben, to just hold off the field and take the first win of his grasstrack career. In fact, all the handicap races both fixed and freewheel were exciting and close on the line – great handicapping!
Races for our youngest riders having finished, there was still a devil and a 4 lap scratch for our group 1 and 2 freewheel racers, with Denholm riding extremely well to take the wins from Sebastien.
Nick Barnes was again too strong in the fixed wheel races, winning the sprint, devil and unknown distance while Megan and Sasha took wins in the women and girls sprint and scratch races.
Well done to all riders and thanks to all volunteers that make it happen!
